3 MINUTE GUIDE

Your first translation
in three minutes.

Start with the steps below. You can adjust recognition, translation and display options later for your game, manga or network.

01 / INSTALL

Download and grant permissions

Download the latest APK from GitHub Releases. Open Screen Translator and follow the first-run permission prompts.

  1. Install the latest release

Requires an arm64 phone running Android 8.0 or later. Android may ask you to allow installation from this source.

  2. Allow overlay display

The floating button starts translation. Overlay permission lets the button and translated text appear above other apps.

  3. Allow screen capture

Confirm the Android screen-capture prompt when you start capture. No root is required. Also allow notifications during setup.

02 / FIRST TRANSLATION

Return to your content and tap the button

Open your game, manga or visual novel. Once the screen has finished appearing, tap the floating button to show translations near the original text.

Translate the whole screen

Tap the floating button for game menus, dialogue or a full manga page.

Translate a selected region

Long-press the button, choose word-pick translation, then draw around a word or phrase.

Follow dialogue automatically

Enable loop translation from the long-press menu. It can wait for dialogue to finish typing and skip unchanged screens.

Keep controls uncovered

Choose the floating-window display mode to gather translations in a window you can move and resize.

Tip: tap a translation to hide it, or long-press to select and copy it. Settings also let a tap open the source and translation panel.
03 / CHOOSE A PRESET

Choose a preset for what you are reading

First-run setup and settings include ready-made presets. Choose the closest use case and adjust individual options later.

Japanese manga

The Manga preset handles vertical bubbles, right-to-left reading order and manga fonts.

Games and visual novels

The Game preset suits menus and dialogue. Use a floating window to avoid covering game controls.

Unreliable network

Choose Offline and download the required models beforehand. Screenshots and text can then stay on your phone.

Choose a translation provider

Configure your preferred online service, test the connection and check its pricing before use.

04 / USEFUL TIPS

Useful everyday controls

Look up a word

Select a word for a translation. LLM engines can add pronunciation, definitions and examples. You can also send selected text from another app through the system menu.

Listen to text

Enable read-aloud in settings to hear source text, translations or a selected word. Tap again to pause or choose another passage.

Keep names consistent

Save names, places and terms in a glossary. Apply terms globally or to a particular game.

Save your preset

Save your preferred settings for manga, games or offline reading, then switch presets from the floating menu.

Use the volume keys

Enable Screen Translator in Android accessibility settings, then hold both volume keys for about 0.3 seconds to trigger translation.

Keep the service running

If the button disappears, follow the in-app instructions to allow background activity and exclude the app from battery optimization.

05 / PRIVACY

You choose where your screen is processed

With offline recognition and translation, screenshots and text can stay on your phone. Online recognition, translation or speech sends the relevant content to your chosen provider.

Keep content on your phone

Choose Offline and prepare the required models. Phone performance affects processing time and battery use.

Use online services

Use providers you trust and check their privacy policies, usage limits and pricing.

Configuration backups include presets, terms and fonts. Account keys are excluded.
06 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need root?

No. Confirm the Android screen-capture prompt to start.

Why is the capture black?

Some apps block screen capture. Screen Translator respects that protection and cannot translate those screens.

Why is the first run slow?

Your phone may be preparing or downloading models. Try a smaller translation region or an online preset if processing is slow.

Which phones are supported?

Published APKs support arm64 phones with Android 8.0 or later. They do not support 32-bit ARM or x86 devices.

Do online services charge?

The app is free and open source. Some online providers require an account or charge for usage. Check their terms.

Where can I get help?

Search settings first. If you still need help, open a GitHub Issue with your phone model, Android version and steps to reproduce the problem.
